Support - it counts!

You should receive this e-mail about twelve weeks after your quitting date.

Hello!

Knowing you have support is one of the keys to successfully quitting smoking. Even several weeks after quitting, you might still need support, so feel free to call on all available resources.

Tip of the week
Another way to keep at it could be to offer your help to someone else wanting to quit smoking. Your advice is invaluable because you have gone through the same stages! You will be able to be understanding during moments of impatience… and mood swings! Your support role will be priceless in helping to get through more difficult periods but also to highlight the person’s efforts and successes. Share each other’s tips; they could be useful to both of you!

Take advantage of the supportive spirit of the on-line community of the Challenge site

Why not encourage other new ex-smokers by sharing your experience? It’s a very rewarding and motivating thing to do!

You can also get free, confidential, personalized services by calling 1-866-527-7383 or by visiting a Quit Smoking Centre. To find a centre near you, check the “In your area” heading (page available in French).

I can do it myself

Does this statement apply to you? Use your diary to reflect on your capacity to accept help.

  • If you’re a loner, why is this so? Would you like to be different or are you happy the way you are?
  • Do you believe that asking your friends for help is a sign of strength or weakness?
  • Evaluate the support you have asked for and received since you quit smoking.
  • Have you brushed off offers of help, either because of shyness, fear of taking advantage of others, being negatively judged or simply because it didn’t fit your needs?
  • Are you the type of person who is concerned with the needs of others but who refuses help when it is offered?

If you feel the need to make adjustments to your situation, try to make a few changes in the weeks ahead, with the goal of better meeting your own needs and easing your transition to life without cigarettes. Learning to ask for and accept help will be useful not only in quitting smoking, but in other areas of your life as well.

Have a great week!
