An experience to share

You should receive this e-mail about five months after your quitting date.

Hello!

Congratulations! You've now lived five months smoke-free - that's more than 20 weeks!

What would you say to sharing your success story with us? It could only help - both you and others who have also tried to free themselves from smoking. Share your experience and accomplishment with the other visitors to the site. Talk about your highs, your lows and, of course, your tips for living smoke-free.

Whether you tell your story in the Challenge forum or in the Testimonials section of the Challenge site, we're interested! And take the opportunity to send us a photo of yourself for the site's Album.

Tip of the month
Why not thank those who helped you or those who continue to help you in your battle? If you participated in the Challenge, think about your sponsor, or your teammate who also quit smoking. Find enjoyable ways to highlight and recognize your appreciation of them. For example:
  • give them a list of the pleasures and benefits you've discovered since quitting smoking
  • celebrate your partnership around a table, with a great meal that you've prepared for them
  • invite them on an outing with you: a show, a picnic in the great outdoors, a bike excursion, a trip to the market…

David and Goliath!
"I quit smoking five months ago. Even today, I sometimes feel like I want to buy just ONE cigarette. I can go several days without experiencing this 'nicotine torment,' and then - wham! - something happens that upsets me, and I immediately think of smoking that ONE cigarette. But despite that, I haven't cracked. I'm too proud of myself and I'd be disappointed in myself if I fell back into that habit.

I feel so much freer since I stopped smoking! No more having to go outside for my work breaks. No more cleaning ashtrays and yellowed curtains. I really gave myself the best gift this year. It's still a battle, but I keep at it by telling myself that the desire to smoke lasts only a few minutes. I have no intention of going back. I'm doing too well. The air smells great. I'm less winded. In short, it's almost like a new life for me! There was Before Cigarettes and now, After Cigarettes.

Good luck to everyone who is living this battle! Don't give up!"

I never would have thought…
"I never would have thought I'd be able to one day say that I would quit smoking. Everyone around me was ready to encourage me, but if you're not ready yourself, no one can do anything to help you. I even went so far as to say that the risks of cancer didn't bother me and that I'd never want to quit. That was before learning some very surprising news: I had a little baby in my belly. Oh boy! I had a huge addiction, but was it strong enough to keep this little being in smoke? I gathered all the strength I had and, with much determination, I succeeded in getting past it.

I'll never say it was easy. The first three weeks were disastrous and I relapsed. I went through all sorts of feelings of absence and missing something, but the joy of carrying my child made me forget the demon that is nicotine. Having a reason to quit: that's the secret.

It's a constant battle, but just a little advice and one or two supporters can make all the difference. To those who plan to quit soon, I wish you good luck. And be proud of yourself. The first weeks are difficult, but after a certain stage, you won't want to start again and ruin all your efforts. Congratulate yourself for every day, week and month of saving so much money and being 100 times healthier.

It's the best gift you can give yourself!"

Julie, Prévost
