How can you ensure people keep their pledge to not smoke?
Obviously, we're not going to meet all the Challenge participants to check whether they respect their commitment. The Quit to Win! Challenge is based on the good faith of both participants and their partners. That's why we presume everyone who registers for the Challenge is sincere and will take up the Challenge. However, when awarding the prizes we make sure the winners have kept their promise. They must sign a declaration under oath attesting they have not smoked during the Challenge period, and we may administer a screening test that proves whether or not they have smoked.
What is the screening test you can administer to check whether winners have abstained from smoking during the Challenge period?
The test detects the presence of thiocyanate in saliva. This substance is generated by the combustion of tobacco and remains present for several days in the saliva and blood of a person who has smoked. It's an excellent way to objectively verify whether potential winners have truly met the Challenge.
What happens if I have a relapse?
First, you will no longer be eligible for the prize draw, because to win a prize you must not have smoked at all during the Challenge period. But that is no reason to give up. You can try to quit smoking again and continue to take advantage of the support from the telephone helpline, the Challenge Web site, the information and encouraging emails offered by the Challenge. Remind yourself that each attempt is a victory and don't forget that the only real failure is to quit trying.
What happens if a person whose name is drawn fails the test?
Unfortunately, that person will not receive a prize. Another name will be drawn and the first person to meet the eligibility rules will be declared the prize winner.
If I live in a place where there is lots of smoke, would I not fail the test because of the second-hand smoke?
Second-hand smoke is more diluted than the smoke inhaled by smokers, and leaves no significant amounts in saliva. In contentious cases, other measures will be applied to determine the smoking status of the participant.
